It takes nothing less than a spine of steel.
Try running a business on Congress in the pre-renovation years.
Try running a business that relies on the club/goth/fetish scene
in a city ruled by golfers in polo shirts. Try dealing with the
giggling normals ("Ooh! A vinyl bra!") in addition to the colorful
locals. Margo's done it well, not only surviving but flourishing
with Hydra, her landmark boutique at Congress and Sixth. Margo takes
an active role in local business issues, proving the value of alternative
entrepreneurs to those doing the counting. She also finds time to
volunteer for wildlife rescue. Along with sister Kanella (proprietress
of the eponymous store on 4th Avenue), Margo's made sure that Tucson
is fabulously dressed. Or semi-dressed.
NAME:
"Margo Susco."
OCCUPATION:
"Business owner."
QUOTE:
"People need to dress up more, dammit!"
OTHER CO-CONSPIRATORS:
"I have some great people here on staff, a lot of
them have been here for years. There's Steve, Jae, Candice...she
is actually the most recent hire, only been working here for 4 years
[laughs]. We have a family thing here and everyone on staff is really
cool."
BORN IN:
"Right here in Tucson."
LIFE STORY IN BRIEF:
"Born in Tucson, graduated from the U of A in '88,
then I moved to Spain where I taught English, moved to Seattle,
then lived in LA for a while where I worked in various fashion shows.
I was visiting Tucson so much, I just came back to live here."
HOW LONG IN TUCSON:
"About thirty, thirty-five years of my life have been
spent here."
WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN ON THE LOCAL SCENE:
"Better music played in the bars. Places need to stay
open 'til at least 2am. More places need to start doing after-hours.
There need to be more places for local bands to play, even this
is the best I've seen it for musicians in six years. People need
to dress up more, damnit!."
CONNECTING POINTS:
"I go to DV8 for 70's night because I love to disco dance. I don't really like DV8, but it's one of the rare places that play 70's. I also like to hang out at the smaller bars downtown. I was raised on big band music so I like to go to Ventana Canyon to hear big bands. And of course, there's Club Congress."
